Pay attention that this question is to find the greatest common factor. The question should be 1: 40, 16 instead of 40+16, thus the greatest common factor is 8*(5, 2), it is 8.

Same idea that 2: 36,32 instead of 36+32. Pay attention that the greatest common factor is 4* (9, 8), thus the greatest common factor is 4.

16=8*2

 

GCF=8

40+16=8*5+8*2

          =8(5+2)=8*7=56
