Where did you hear that Volta attributed his electric current "to the flow of electrons"? Volta essentially followed up on Galvani's studies of electricity in frog legs. He found that you didn't need animals to make electricity, but only two different metals and a 2nd material which later turned out to be an electrolyte. I'm not familiar with any case where Volta referred to the flow of electrons. Can you provide a source for that statement? Thanks.
