In 1962 Rachel Carson released the book titled “Silent Spring” which addressed the widespread use of powerful pesticides, including Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in the environment to control the gypsy moth and other perceived “pests.”
Carson studied the effects that these pesticides had on both the environment and on people. While the book met with strong resistance by government and chemical company interests, it drew public attention to the problems associated with the rampant use of such chemicals.
As a result of her book, and supporting research, along with a public uprising, the use of DDT was banned for use in the US.
Another effect of her book and the ensuing public debate was the start of a grassroots environmental movement that eventually led to the formation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
