Adding dodge and burn

How would you add dodge and/or burn to a layer without destroying it?

First make 2 layers one for burn and one for dodge, and depending on the project you can put the layers into different placements for innovation . this is a non destroyable because you have made 2 layers separate form each other meaning that you will be able to modify the content in each layer with out destroying the whole piece.

Yes, as mentioned above, duplicating your original layer, will allow you to make multiple changes without creating destructive behaviors. Creating the 2 duplicate layers, one for dodging and the other for burning, will allow you to experiment with each independently.

Usually when I use dodge/burn on a specific layer, I duplicate my layer using (ctrl+J) and hide it. So even if the dodge/burn didn't go well, you can just delete the whole layer without any damage for your project.

A good tip for using dodge/burn in photoshop is to adjust the exposure of the tool. Usually I go by 18% which give me more control over the effect of the tool.
