I have no idea what the ammonium chloride experiment is that you did. However, one main difference between effusion and diffusion of gases is that effusion is the movement of a gas through a tiny pin hole, whereas diffusion is the movement of a gas from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. There are many others definitions but in chemistry, this is usually the distinction that is made.
