When two lines are parallel, they will have the same slope. So our first step must be to identify the slope of the given line.
8x + y = -5 to identify the slope write this line in slope intercept form. To do this subtract 8x from. Each side.
8x +y = -5
-8x -8x
y = -8x -5. The slope of this line is -8. Since the parallel line must have the same slope, it's slope is also -8.
For our parallel line: m=-8 and the point on the line is ( 1,5)
Now we need to find the intercept
y = mx +b Plug in m=-8, x =1 and y =5
5 = -8(1) + b
5 = -8 + b
13 = b
Now write the y = mx + b Equation for the parallel line with m = -8 and b =13
y= -8x +13
