This used to confuse me, too, buuuut if we draw a line segment joining our 2 points, then another from (-3,9) to (-3,-3) and a 3rd from (-3,-3) over to (6,-3), we have a right triangle with the line segment joining our two points being the hypotenuse. What's the formula?
a2 + b2 = c2, right?
c = √(a2 + b2)
How do we find the length of our legs? How far apart are our points?
c = √((6 - (-3))2 + ((-3) - 9)2)
c = √(92 + (-12)2)
c = √(81 + 144)
c = √225
c = 15
