the midpoint is the average of the endpoints. add the endpoints, then divide by 2
(-2 + 9)/2 = 7/2 = 3.5 = midpoint

On this segment, the coordinate of the midpoint is the average of the coordinates of A and B.
M = (A+B)/2
M = (-2+9) / 2
m = 7/2 (or 3.5)
