Olivia needs to mix paint and paint thinner to paint her house. It takes 20 liters of paint to prepare 25 liters of

mixture. How many liters of paint thinner would Olivia need to prepare a mixture containing 8 liters of paint?

If it takes 20 liters of paint to make a mixture of paint and thinner, then

20/25 = 4/5 of the mixture is paint and 1/5 is thinner.

If 8 liters of paint is used, then there is still the ratio of 1 part thinner to 5 parts mixture.

Let x = the amount of thinner.

x/(8+x) = 1/5

5x = 8+x

4x=8

x=2 liters of thinner.

8/(8+x) = 4/5

40 = 32+4x

4x=8

x=2 liters of thinner
