If it takes 20 liters of paint to make a mixture of paint and thinner, then
20/25 = 4/5 of the mixture is paint and 1/5 is thinner.
If 8 liters of paint is used, then there is still the ratio of 1 part thinner to 5 parts mixture.
Let x = the amount of thinner.
x/(8+x) = 1/5
5x = 8+x
4x=8
x=2 liters of thinner.

You can also work this out by maintaining the 4/5 ratio of paint to the mixture.
8/(8+x) = 4/5
40 = 32+4x
4x=8
x=2 liters of thinner
