Alex is 1.80 meters tall. He casts a shadow that is 1.45 meters long. At a distance of 4.95 meters from the tree his shadow reaches the end of a tree's shadow. What is the tree's height?

This creates two similar triangles. Construct a line from the tip of the shadows across the top of Alex's head and to the top of the tree. Let the angle formed between the tip of the shadow and the ground be θ. Let y be

the height of the tree.

tan(θ) = 1.8/1.45 = y/(1.45+4.95) = y/6.4

y = (6.4)(1.8/1.45) = 7.945 meters (≈8 meters)
