A random sample of 130 human body temperatures, provided by Allen Shoemaker in the Journal

of Statistical Education, 65 were male and 65 were female. The means and standard deviation

of their temperatures are shown below:

a) Find a 95% condence interval for the dierence in the average body temperatures for

males versus females. Interpret the interval. (6+2=8 marks)

b) Based on this interval, can you conclude that there is a dierence in the average temper-

atures for males versus females? Explain. (2 marks)

Answer 1

CI = mean(male) - mean(female) +/- t-critical * sqrt(SDmale^2/65 + SDfemale^2/65)

where t-critical is t score for 64 DOF and alpha/2 = 0.025.

If CI does not contain zero then we can conclude there is a difference between male and female temperatures with 95% level of confidence.
