driving a car 400 miles, at 20 mpg, you need 400/20 = 20 gallons. Your tank only holds 10 gallons. You need to stop for gas half way. It's a deserted area of the highway, with only one gas station on the way, at the midpoint 200 miles away. At 20 miles per gallon you can only go 20 x 10 = 200 miles
You need to top off the tank to get through the trip.
Or also not do any stop and go driving, accelerate slowly, take advantage of going down hills by letting off the gas, maybe even shutting off the gas for a long stretch of downhill driving. And have a gas can or two in case you don't quite make it to the midpoint. Watch the gas tank and odometer to see if you making it on time with enough gas. Possibly plan on turning back at 100 miles if it looks like you aren't getting enough mileage. Also lighten the car's weight to get better mileage, Empty it of as much as possible. No passengers. Don't pick up hitchhikers. Lose a few pounds yourself before the trip. Don't drink coffee or liquids. Don't get too dehydrated, but make it so you don't need any pit stops. See the Big Bang TV Show where Prof. Sheldon Cooper is the Road God or Travel Supervisor planning & getting through the trip with minimal stops.
Make sure you did the mileage, time & distance calculations accurately.
