xy = -14-x2
x + y = -5, y = -x - 5
x(-x - 5) = -14
-x2 - 5x = -14
x2 + 5x = 14
x2 + 5x - 14 = 0
Can you solve for x and answer?
Do the second problem in the same manner.

Note that, in solving the quadratic, you are doing the mental math that you would do if you were guessing at the answer in the beginning, so making this into a quadratic does not really help (unless you complete the square or use the quadratic formula, which is clearly unnecessary in this case).06/10/21
