Explain why the vapor pressure of salt water is lower than the vapor pressure of water.

The simplest explanation is that the particles of salt interfere with the particles of water evaporating, i.e. they take up some room at the surface of the water so the water molecules can't leave (go into the vapor phase) as easily. This reduces the vapor pressure.
