(1). Li(s) + I2(s) ==> LiI is NOT balanced because you have 2 iodines on the left and only 1 on the right.
2Li(s) + 2I(s) ==> 2 LiI ... This is now balanced
(2). This is both a redox reaction and a synthesis reaction.
(3). Yes, it is a redox reaction.
(4). Li goes from oxidation number zero on the left to oxidation number 1+ on the right. Therefore it lost an electron so it was oxidized.
I goes from zero on the left to 1- on the right (oxidation numbers), so it has gained an electron and it was reduced.
Since Li was oxidized, it is the reducing agent.
Since I was reduced, it is the oxidizing agent.
