The four girls washed the neighbor's dog for 50 cents. They didn't know how to divide the money, so the dog owner said: "I will give the four of you 4/5 of the total amount. To the first one to tell me how much that is, I will give 1/2 of the other 1/5" . If someone gave the dog owner the right answer, how did the money get divided up?

4/5 x 50 = 40 cents

1/5 x 50 = 10 cents

each girl gets 10 cents, and one might get another 5 cents, while the dog owner cheats them all out of the remaining 5 cents.

45 cents gets divided up among the the 4 girls instead of the original 50 cents they all agreed upon.

could be 4 misdemeanor thefts in many states, with up to 4 years jail.

or it could be felony fraud, with 4 counts, with up to the rest of his life in prison. He sounds like he's cheated others out of money the same way in the past. An aggravating factor for sentencing.
