Matt had 1/6 as many sports cards as Jacob. When Jacob gave half of his sports cards to Matt, he then had 8 fewer sports cards than his friend. How many sports cards did Jacob have at first?

j gives 24 to m, m then has 24+8=32, j has 24

32-24=8

m=j/6

j/6- (1/2)(j/6) = m+j/12-8

j/6-j/12-j/12= m-8

0=m-8

m=8

j= 12m+j-96= 12(j/6)+j=96=2j+j-96=3j-96

0=2j-96

2j=96

j=48 for jacob

m=48/6=8 for matt

jacob gives half 48 = 24 to matt

then matt has 24+8= 32

jacob then has 32-8=24 = 48/2
