A tuna sandwich costs $1.65 and a chicken salad sandwich costs $2.10. If Sierra bought 24 sandwiches for $45.45, how many were tuna and how many were chicken salad?

Answer 1

1.65t + 2.1c = 45.45

t + c = 24

1.65t + 1.65c = 24(1.65)

subtract last equation from 1st to eliminate one variable and get

.45c = 45.45 - 24(1.65) = 45.45 - 39.6 = 5.85

c = number of chicken sandwiches = 5.85/.45 = 13

t = 24-13 = 11 tuna sandwiches

or solve by graphing the two equations and find their intersection point = (t,c) = (11,13) 11 tuna sandwiches and 13 chicken sandwiches. Use a graphing calculator
