N (nitrogen) is atomic number 7. It has 7 protons and 7 electrons.
The electron configuration looks likes this...
1s2 2s2 2p3
If N is to become an ion, it will want to gain 3 more electrons in order to complete the p orbital and make 8 (octet) electrons in the 2nd energy level (stable). This would make the configuration 1s2 2s2 2p6 and since it gained 3 electrons, it would have a 3- charge.
