Let x represent the length of DB and BC.  Write the length of AB as an expression involving x.

ADE ~ △ABC.

Given:DE = 4, AD = 9, DB = BC

Find:AB

Let x represent the length of DB and BC.

Write the length of AB as an expression involving x.

Set up some proportions, using lengths, until you find a proportion that has only one unknown. Then, solve for that unknown. Hint: If you can find DB (= BC), you can add it to AD (=9) to find the length of AB.

According to the picture, you have similar right triangles, AB = DB + AD and you have a value for AD and you know it is the hypotenuse for the smaller Triangle.
