Question

I have a glass that has a radius of 1.4 inches and a height of 8 inches. I currently have water in it so that the water comes up to a height of 6 inches Draw this out. My ice cube tray makes ice cubes that are perfectly square on all sides and measure 1 inch in each direction. How many ice cubes could I put in my drink without it spilling over?

How do we find the volume of any container? The area of the base times the height, right?

The area of a circle is πr². This gives is the volume formula for a cylinder...

V = πr²h

V = π(1.4²)6 = 37 in³

A cube measuring 1 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch is 1(1)(1) = 1 in³

I still have, though, 2 extra inches of my glass to fill.

V = π(1.4²)8 = 49 in³

49 - 37 = 12 cubes
