The surface area of pyramid = base area + base perimeter * slant height / 2
base area is the area of a square with side equal to 12 = 12 * 12 = 144
perimeter of base = 12 * 4 = 48
slant height is the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed with the height (6) and half the length of a side of the base square (6) as legs, so by the Pythagorean Theorem, slant height = sqrt(6^2 + 6^2). = 8.5
Plug those numbers into the formula at the top to compute the surface area.
