First, you need to know the solubility rules or at least look up the reactants and products to see if they are soluble or not. If not, then we refer to them as (s) solid. The same goes for compounds that exist in the gaseous state under the conditions of the experiment. They get a (g) and liquids (generally reserved for H2O, get (l). Basically, you just have to learn what is what under the given conditions.
