Let's say the two numbers are X and Y. Let X be the smaller number (line 2). Take the two pieces of information from the problem and write them as equations (lines 3 and 4). Note that in line 4 that we need to subtract 24 from 6X to make it equal to 2Y.

Rearrange iline 3 to solve for X to produce line 5. Use this definition of X in the equation on line 4 to produce line 6. Solve this for Y (lines 7-9). Then use Y= 15 in line 3 to find X = 9. Try the vaues of X and Y in the original equations to see if they work. (They should, and do).
