I know this might sound crazy.. but listening to those who thrive in this genre will help you. If you are able to fully encompass and understand the skills of those you admire, you can hone in on these techniques and apply it to yourself. Essentially, understanding the base level of expertise will help you understand how to shape yourself as a musician and thus be able to put your own voice in there.
Also, in terms of improvisation itself, having a strong understanding of music theory helps a lot. If you are able to fundamentally understand scales, chord progressions and other music theory concepts, you will not struggle with improvisation as a whole. This will give you more "brainpower" in the moment for the more technical aspects of singing.
