Calculate the densities of both the water and the isopropyl alcohol and the percent error...

The accepted value for the density of water is 1.00 g/mL and the accepted density for isopropyl alcohol is 0.786 g/mL.

percent error = experimental density minus accepted density divided by accepted density times 100

Mass A: graduated cylinder = 18.13 g

Volume of water put into the graduated cylinder = 5.0 mL

Mass B: graduated cylinder with liquid (water) = 22.96 g

Mass B - A: liquid (water) = 4.83 g

Density (g/mL) of water ?

Percent error of water ?

Mass A: graduated cylinder = 18.13 g

Volume of isopropyl alcohol put into the graduated cylinder = 5.0 mL

Mass B: graduated cylinder with liquid (isopropyl alcohol) = 22.21 g

Mass B - A: liquid (isopropyl alcohol) = 4.08 g

Density (g/mL) of isopropyl alcohol ?

Percent error of isopropyl alcohol ?

So isopropyl alcohol would be 4.32 percent?

The density of the alcohol is 4.08g / 5.0ml giving an experimental density of 0.816g/mL. The accepted density is 0.786 so (0.816-0.786)/0.786 = 3.82%. What did you calculate for the density? Do you see how we got different answers?

0.815 for density. You don't round it to 0.82?

yes I didn't round to significant figures. the 5.0 mL would limit significant figures to 2.

So then it would be 4.32 percent?

ok yes I see how you got the answer. You may want to ask professor about significant figures. I was keeping the significant figures for real and experimental consistent. You have the idea now on how this works. If you have a need for extra help with a tutor session let me know.
