In order for Hose and marty to compete against each other during the wrestling season next year they need to be in the same weight category. Jose weighs 180 pounds and plans to gain 2 pounds per week. Marty weighs 249 pounds and plans to lose one per week. In how many weeks will they weigh the same?

Let Jose's weight be 180 + 2w.  This is Jose's in w weeks.

Let Marty's weight be 249 - w. This is Marty's in w weeks.

 

180 + 2w = 249 - w     (Add w to both sides)

180 + 3w = 249          (Subtract 180 from both sides)

3w = 69                      (Divide both sides by 3)

w = 23

 

Their weights will be the same in 23 weeks
