Question

A rectangle is twice as long as it is wide. If it’s length is decreased by 2, its area is decreased by 24. Find its original dimensions.

L=2W

A=LW = 2W^2

(L-2)W = A-24

(2W-2)W = 2W^2 -24

2W^2 -2W = 2W^2 -24

2W = 24

W =24/2 = 12

L= 2(12) = 24

new dimensions are 22 x 12 = new Area of 264

old dimensions were 12 x 24 = 288 which is 24 more than the new area
