Given the points:
- (x1, y1) = (-6, -19)
- (x2, y2) = (2, 5)
We can find the equation of the line through these points by
- Calculate the Slope
- Slope = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) = (5- -19)/2- -6) = (5+19)/(2+6) = 24/8 = 3
- Recall that when you subtract a negative number the sign switches to become addition.
- Use the slope-intercept equation of a line
- y = mx +b
- y = 3x +b
- Now, use one of the points (it really doesn't matter which one so pick one that will make the problem easier for you) to solve for the quantity 'b'
- 5 = 3(2) + b ..... 5 = 6 +b .... subtract 6 from both sides to get:
- b = -1
- Put it all together for the equation of the line:
- y = 3x - 1
