Actually, they are called sunspots.
The sun is a huge ball of electrically-charged hot gas. Because of the sun’s high temperature, the gas is constantly moving. As a result, a powerful magnetic field is generated. The sun's magnetic field goes through a cycle, commonly called the solar cycle. A solar cycle happens approximately every 11 years.
Sunspots are dark spots we see on the sun's surface. They occur in areas where the magnetic fields are exceptionally strong. The more sunspots we see, the more solar activity there is.
