so on my math paper it says Evaluate l-11l - l5l

You'll kick yourself for not having recognized them, but the || bars denote the math operation "take the absolute value of". For a number inside that's <0, you flip the sign; for a number >=0, you just drop the bars and write it as a positive number.

So your expression transforms into:

11 - 5 which I'm hoping you can handle?
