One thing used in naming covalent compounds that is not used in naming ionic compounds is the use of prefixes such as di, tri, penta, etc. For example N2O5 is named dinitrogen pentoxide (a covalent compound), but Na2O (an ionic compound) is simply named sodium oxide (not di sodium oxide).
