How can I calm down before giving a speech?
I get really nervous when I have to talk in front of a class or give a presentation. I just read off my notes or the Powerpoint and my teacher keeps asking me to be louder. I get so scared that my voice shakes. I really hate asking a question in class or on Zoom too.

Being nervous speaking in front of people is completely normal!
When you're giving a presentation, try to be as prepared as possible. Then I would suggest practicing in front of friends and/or family so you get used to seeing people in front of you. Remember that punctuation in written sentences are great places to stop for a breath and that no one (not even your teacher) expects you to be perfect. Taking deep breaths from the belly will help stabilize your voice and (if you have a few minutes by yourself before the presentation) try jumping up and down or doing a quick skip around the room to burn off nervous energy.
As for speaking in class, being shy is ok. The world is weird right now so taking some time to get used to Zoom classes is cool. Remember that no one will judge you for not understanding something and that you might even be helping someone else out by asking a question. Maybe they didn't understand something or needed clarification too.

Hey there!
You have three awesome answers above, just wanted to chime in. Something that has always helped me face stage fright/butterflies/public speaking anxiety is repeating this in my head, "Nothing to prove, everything to share."
Whether it's a presentation for a class, a speech you're asked to give, or even being called on in class, remember that you do NOT have to prove anything (your intelligence level, how "good" you are, etc.). Focus on the subject, the topic, what you want to share and allow that to come out the best way you can.
Another small thing that helps is breathing. Sounds simple, but often those nerves skyrocket because we're not focusing on how we breathe. Thus sweating, rapid breaths, heart racing. Before you have to speak, tell yourself to breathe. Take three deep breaths and do whatever else you need during them– shake your hands, stretch, etc.
You got it!

Speaking in public or on zoom can be difficult. The reality there will be some folks who will laugh or be rude at you struggling to speak public. First thing you tell yourself is they do not matter. You can't change a jerk, only how you respond to their behavior. You do that by becoming an amazing speaker.
Secondly, you may want to avoid caffeine or sugars on the day that you have a public speech. Do yoga, listen to music or what ever makes you comfortable. I always drink herbal tea and stretch. Third, be prepared know your speech cold. Do not over due it because it will sound rehearsed. Fourth, and most importantly, do mirror talks tell your self repeatedly how great you are. As a man thinketh he is! Last confidence is the key. I can help you with this ! I am the one who can help you speak with swag n confidence in public..i await your reply. Take care.

I can help prepare you with confidence for your presentation!
Kate M.'s answer was spot-on!
We can get nervous for many different reasons. It might be fear of a bad grade, or of being laughed at or judged harshly, or even fear that you will misrepresent a topic very near and dear to your heart.
When you have the choice, it can help if you can choose a topic you are personally very excited about - one that you can talk about or already know well as long as you don't get too emotional to speak clearly.
When you don't have a choice on your topic of presentation, make sure you become knowledgeable enough to speak with confidence. Check out extra books on the source materiel and look up videos online of similar presentations.
All of these aspects can help you stand in front of a crowd of strangers and bring your best.
Best of luck on your projects! :)

Depending on your age and health, physicians commonly prescribe Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Medications, or anti-high blood pressure meds, to calm public speakers who experience generalized anxiety prior to public speaking. There are no undesired side effects and the results are effective. Low-dose Metoprolol or Lopressor, say 15 to 25mg orally usually suffices. They block the unwanted effects released during times of stress from Epinephrine and Norepinephrine. It worked great for me and I no longer require them and actually enjoy speaking in front of peers and colleagues now. Good luck!12/19/20
