If you divide the trapezoid into 2 triangles both triangles have the same height but different bases.

The area of one triangle will be 1/2 b₁ h. and the area of the second triangle will be 1/2 b₂ h

When you add these 2 together and factor out the 1/2 and the h you get A = 1/2 h (b₁ + b₂)
