How do we figure out how to name chemistry compounds?

There are entire chapters written in Chemistry books showing us how to name chemical compounds. The rules are different for ionic compounds vs. covalent compounds, and further different for organic compounds vs, inorganic compounds. One cannot possibly answer this broad question in the space provided here.
