Listen to the music you want to improvise in, and then learn the basics of the songs you would like to solo over. This includes form, melody, harmony, rhythm, and different colors. Also, I like to start by doing free improvisation in order to get you out of soloing in a fixed constraint of notes and explore the possibilities.
