karen starts with a 3 ft piece of wood that she wants to use to fix a bookshelf. she cuts off 2 pieces that are 3/4 ft and 3 pieces that are 1/8 ft. how much wood does she have left

2 x 3/4 plus 3 x 1/8 =

6/4 + 3/8 = 12/8 + 3/8 = 15/8 = 1 7/8

3 - 1 7/8 = 1 1/8 = 9/8 feet = 1 foot and 1/8 of a foot or 1 foot and 12/8 = 3/2 = 1 1/2 inches

what's left is 1 foot and 1 1/2 inches of wood

Karen used up 15/8. 3 feet = 24/8 feet

24/8 - 15/8 = (24-15)/8 = 9/8 feet = 1 1/8 feet

an 1/8 of a foot = 12/8 inches = 1 1/2 inches
