The idea gas law is just what you said it is. It is derived from other "equations" that are used to describe the various behaviors of gases in an ideal situation.
The ideal gas law is PV = nRT
where P = pressure
V = volume (in liters)
n = moles
R = the gas constant (several values depending on the units of pressure being used)
T = temperature in Kelvin
