The formula for the area of a rectangle is length * width
However, the dimensions are given in feet and they want the answer in yards. So you can either covert the feet to yards and then multiply, or multiply then convert to square yards.
Method 1:
18 feet = 18/3 = 6 yards
12 feet = 12/3 = 4 yards
Area = length * width = 6 * 4 = 24 square yards
Method 2:
Area = length * width = 18 * 12 = 216 square feet
There are 9 square feet in one square yard, so
216 square feet/9 square feet/yd = 24 square yards
