Planning (hands down!)- The most important part of ANY project is the planning process! Which, by the way, typically gets the least amount of time dedicated to it.
There are two purposes behind planning. The first is to plan what our goals are and how we will attempt to accomplish those goals. The second, is to plan our contingency actions - because the plan rarely works out exactly as planned. Eisenhower, when he was General of the Allied forces in WWII, said “plans are worthless but planning is everything.” He said you MUST have a battle plan. But the moment you enter the battlefield- throw away the plan! Your contingency plans will guide you to success.
I site one other example. In 1911, the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen beat British Royal Naval officer Robert Falcon Scott to the South Pole due to Amundsen's penchant for detailed planning. (Look up the story...it's a fascinating account!)
