Hi Trinique R,
Legalities of a mentor program
Establish best practices from the beginning to clearly state the purpose, reason behind the mentoring program.
- Mentoring is free. There is no monetary incentive. A person does it with good intent and to pay it forward. What a person tells someone is not necessarily pure gold and is based on experiences. A person should also know if they need legal advice to seek an attorney; if they need tax advice to seek an accountant. An individual should not be a mentor without knowing what it entails and agrees and adheres to all organization guidelines prior to doing so. The thing we have that is valuable is time and people want to respect and use it wisely. Mentee should have that courtesy as well. Be where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. And Mentor to be present.
- Resources. If an organization is providing a mentoring program, there should be adequate resources for the Mentor and Mentee to access and available to provide guidance if needed as additional materials. For example, a collaboration site with tools, templates, books, checklists, etc. Anything that is geared towards adding value, teaching a lesson, helping to prove a point and learn, etc.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Kim
