The simple answer to this would be to do your due diligence; a lot of it. Right now at this very moment, we're seeing the age of technology prevail. Companies like Amazon will be seen in textbooks decades from now, as educational organizations will not be able to find a better example of success. My advice to the individual would be to do your research, heavily, on the company you're looking to work for and get involved with. Questions I would ask myself are: 1) how are they using technology? 2) where on the bell curve are they in terms of progression and operations?, 3) Do I see myself fitting a crucial aspect of their needs? This doesn't mean that it's not a good idea to go work for a Company that's behind on the times, just the opposite I think, actually; that could be the opportunity of a lifetime (assuming you think you can help convince the Company to make the leap). The key is to be prepared and understand what you're stepping into, before you take the step.
I would go so far as to say that the "management" aspect of the question doesn't scratch surface of the importance of the decision. My focus would be on where the Company is in the market, and where they stand with technology.
