a = number of shows A performed
b = number of shows B performed
a = 3b + 4 ("Singer A performed four more than three times as many shows .... than Singer B.")
a = b + 38 ("The number of Singer A concert tour shows exceeded the number of shows by Singer B by 38.
")
Since a=a you can substitute both right hand sides to get:
3b + 4 = b + 38
2b = 34
b = 17 ---> a = 17 + 38 = 55
Ans: A performed 55 shows, B performed 17 shows
Check: 3*17 + 4 = 51 + 4 = 55 (ok)
and 55 = 17 + 38 (ok)
