To answer that question, we need to think of two perfect squares that are close to 86. I like to use a "trial and error" strategy. Let's see... 52 is 25... nope, way too small. Let's try 72=49. Still way too small. How about 92= 81. That's a good start! 81 is close to 86. It's just a little bit less than 86.
Now let's find another perfect square that's close to, but bigger than 86. How about 102= 100? That works.
Since 86 is between 81 and 100, we know that the square root of 86 is between 9 and 10. This is because 9 is the square root of 81 and 10 is the square root of 100.
We can make sure we're right by getting a scientific calculator and typing in √86. 9.2736... yes, that's between 9 and 10.
