asked 06/14/20How to get an American citizenship as an American
Hi, so my mom is an American who was born in American in 1985, lived 3 years and then she left for Iraq and lived the rest of her life there. I have been living here all my life as well, I am 17 years old. I read I am eligible for citizenship. What are the next steps I need to take and what exactly do I need to do? Everything I find online is complicated.

Hi Abdullah,
You are right, it is complicated. Did your mom give up her US citizenship when she moved to Iraq? I am not an immigration attorney so I can't give you legal advice. Have you gone to the US Embassy in Baghdad? They may have someone who can walk you through the process. I think the short answer is that it depends what the law was when you were born.
I'm sorry I can't help you more. I prepare people for their USCIS interview and the civics, writing, and reading tests.
Good luck!
