Since B and C trisect AD, then AC is twice CD.
4x - 2 = 2 * (x+4)
4x - 2 = 2x + 8
2x = 10
x=5
so CD = 9 and AD (which is 3 times CD) = 27

Hi Shelly. Assuming all points are on the same line, you only need to add the binomials.
So 4x - 2 + x + 4 = 5x + 2, your answer.
