The squirrels in our yard love black walnuts. 8% seem to prefer storing walnuts in our garage and 10% prefer to store them in our garden pots. If 4% of the squirrels are happy storing walnuts in both places, then what is the probability that a squirrel will store walnuts in either the garage or the garden pots?

Hi Leah. The answer is b, 14%.

You can start by drawing 2 intersecting circles. Since 4% of the squirrels are happy storing in both locations, write 4 in the intersecting part. If you subtract that 4% from the 8% that prefer the garage, there are 4 left. Write that 4 in the larger part of the left circle.

Since 10% prefer the garden pots, subtract that 4% in the intersection from the 10, and you get 6. Write 6 in the larger part of the right circle.

Now add the 3 answers. 4+4+6=14%.
