Question

For your graduation present, your parents are sending you to

Europe for a month (4 weeks). Italy has always been your favorite

and where you plan to spend a significant portion of the vacation.

While in Italy, you plan to rent a motorcycle to tour the

countryside. Your family will only agree to rent you a motorcycle

if you can break down and show them the costs involved. Fortunately, you learned a lot about

systems of equations in Math 1 and presenting them with the information will be a breeze. There

are three rental companies in Rome; each one has a unique rental rate.

● Tony’s Vespa Rentals: $50 up front and $15 per week

● Vito’s Garage: $20 up front and $25 per week

● Mona Lisa’s Motors: $20 per week and $35 up front

Your assignment is to come up with a detailed reason for choosing which company to rent a

motorcycle from in Italy.

1. Show your family a table with the costs broken down

2. Show your family a graph of the costs.

3. Show your family algebraically how to find the best deal.

After coming up with your choice and convincing your family to go with that company, you

receive a coupon from Mona Lisa’s Motors with a special offer. The offer is for a one-day use of

a jet ski at no charge. The usual cost of the jet ski is $15.

The following should help you get started:

The specific information your instructor may be looking for for number 1 will depend on the work you did in the course prior to this problem. He or she may be looking for you to make a table with one columns for the amount up from, another for the weekly costs, another for the equation for the full weekly cost, and one for the total cost keeping in mind the 4 weeks for the vacation.

For number 2 you will likely need to graph the equations from number 1, and include the images in the document you will submit to the instructor

For number 3, the fourth column from number one should help you out.
