Looking at the balanced equation
2Na + Cl2 ==> 2NaCl
we see 2 moles Na reacts with 1 mole Cl2 to produce 2 moles of NaCl
Since we are given grams of Na and grams of Cl2, we need to first convert all to moles
25.0 g Cl2 x 1 mol Cl2/70.9 g = 0.353 moles Cl2
29.0 g Na x 1 mol Na/22.99 g = 1.26 mol Na
According to the balanced equation, which one is in limiting supply?
It would be the Cl2 because of the mole ratio of 2:1 for Na : Cl2
Theoretical yield will thus be based on amount of Cl2 :
0.353 moles Cl2 x 2 moles NaCl/mole Cl2 = 0.706 moles NaCl formed
mass NaCl = 0.706 moles NaCl x 58.44 g/mol = 41.3 g NaCl theoretical yield
