Molarity (M) is defined as moles of solute per liter of solution.
M = mol/L
The units will help you solve problems if you use dimensional analysis. For example, if given a volume and a molarity, you can find the number of moles present:
How many moles are present in 250 ml of a 0.5 M solution of X?
250 ml x 1 L/1000 ml x 0.5 mol/L = moles
